Humanitarian Relief Immigration Options

Humanitarian relief is a critical component of immigration law, designed to protect individuals seeking entry to the U.S.A., or to remain in the U.S.A. due to persecution, instability or natural disaster in their home country. A few options for humanitarian relief include:

Temporary Protected Status (TPS): Typically for individuals experiencing war, environmental disasters or other extraordinary conditions, TPS can provide recipients already in the U.S.A. permission to live and work here temporarily.

Parole, or Parole-in-Place: Parole can be granted to qualifying people outside the U.S.A. who meet criteria under the category established for their country of citizenship (such as Afghan and Ukrainian humanitarian parole programs, and family reunification parole). Parole-in-Place is for people already in the U.S.A. who meet applicable requirements.

I-134A: This form is for those promising to financially support beneficiaries of certain programs such as Uniting for Ukraine, processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans, and family reunification parole.

Asylum: Individuals who face or fear persecution from their own government over their race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or particular social group in their home country may apply for asylum in the U.S.A. In many cases, asylum can provide a path to permanent resident status.

Who Is Eligible For Humanitarian Relief?

Eligibility for humanitarian immigration benefits varies depending on the program. Individuals usually must show that they are facing hardship or persecution in their home country. Each program has distinct requirements and application procedures.
